I've read the Odyssey but never this one. I discovered his translation of The Iliad over 15 years ago, when I was thinking of possibly writing a story that combined elements of biblical history and pagan myth; and I read it again a few years later, when I was doing research for a paper on changes in military I enjoyed Fagles' style very much, and I always meant to get around to reading his translation of The Odyssey, but I never did (though I have read the translations by Robert Fitzgerald and T.E. Idly browsing in the bookshop today I chanced upon a copy of the new Robert Fagles Aeneid translation (in truth it was pretty hard to miss: there was a great big stack of 'em on the shelf; and it's a pretty bulky hardback tome, . There are other equally good translations: Robert Fitzgerald's The Iliad, The Odyssey, and The Aeneid are stunning. Well, here I am, back again, with Robert Fagles's translation of the Iliad. I have the Penguin Deluxe C.Eds. Chris at Prose has a nice post on Iliad translations for those interested, and I believe most have translated the Odyssey as well. One final note, I'm not one that huge on poetry, and the Fagles translation of The Odyssey is definitely in that format. Ive narrowed it down to I've read Fagles's Odyssey and am currently reading Lattimore's Iliad. I know that this topic has been brought up before, but i am still non the wiser on which translation of the odyssey i should go for. Fagles translation, whenever I can find it. Of both The Illiad & The Odyssey, and they outshine (in readability and interest) any other edition I've seen. We'll set aside for the moment the inevitable questions of the pedagogical efficacy of that and move on to this: During my last year there, we adopted the Fagels Iliad, kept the Lattimore Odyssey over Fagels', and used the Fitzgerald Aeneid. The Iliad Homer Translated from the Greek by Robert Fagles, 1990. The events of The Odyssey are supposed to occur twenty years after the events of The Iliad. The more I read The Aeneid, the more I appreciate it. Now that the disclaimer is completed, I would be remiss if I didn't talk about my translation. I found the Iliad shockingly human, from the characters' sulkiness to their blood on the dusty battlefield. I absolutely always go for an R. Never having read many of the ancient classics in my college studies, Homer's Iliad & The Odyssey have long been on my oft-postponed, must-read list.
